It has been a while since the original Performer 8 made waves in the mid-fi scene, but AFUL is back with a successor that looks to be far more than a simple iterative update. The newly announced AFUL Performer 8S (P8S) has officially landed, sporting a massive jump in internal complexity and a fresh aesthetic.
While the original was a solid DD+BA hybrid, the P8S moves into “quad-brid” territory with a unique 9-driver configuration that includes a passive radiator—a rarity in the IEM world.

A Complex 9-Driver Engine
AFUL isn’t playing it safe with the driver count here. Each shell is packed with a mix of technologies designed to cover the entire frequency spectrum:
- 1 Dynamic Driver for the low-end foundation.
- 6 Balanced Armatures handling the mids and highs.
- 1 Micro Planar Driver to add that extra bit of finesse and detail.
- 1 Passive Radiator to physically move air and enhance bass texture.
Managing nine drivers is no small feat, so AFUL is utilising an updated version of its RLC Network crossover alongside a new RESInators 3D-printed micro-resonance chamber. This is designed to keep the phase coherence in check and minimise the distortion that often plagues high-driver-count sets.
The “Dual-Mode” Bass Plug
The most intriguing feature of the P8S is the bass tuning system. Rather than using the typical (and often fiddly) tuning switches or screw-in nozzles, AFUL has implemented a physical plug that interacts with the passive radiator.
- Open Mode: Removing the plug allows the passive radiator to breathe, resulting in a deeper, more elastic, and atmospheric bass response.
- Closed Mode: Inserting the plug tightens things up for a punchier, faster, and more controlled low-end.
Aesthetics and Build
AFUL has moved away from the more understated look of previous models in favour of the “Echoes of Jupiter” design. The faceplates feature swirling patterns inspired by the storms of Jupiter’s North Pole, set into medical-grade resin shells. Despite the high driver count, the brand claims the shells remain lightweight and ergonomic for long listening sessions.
As we’ve come to expect from AFUL, the accessory haul looks solid, including a high-purity 6-strand silver-plated copper cable (available in 3.5mm or 4.4mm).
Pricing and Availability
The AFUL Performer 8S is launching at $389.99, placing it right in the heat of the competitive mid-fi market. If the tuning matches the technical ambition of that 9-driver array, this could be a very compelling option for those looking to upgrade from their current daily drivers.
