BASN MMCX design

Design

The BASN MMCX IEMs boast transparent resin shells and feature swirling green and blue faceplates that are uniquely patterned due to the manufacturing process.

It comes with MMCX sockets – as the name would suggest. The MCMX’s shells have a low profile in the ears, making them feel comfortable and also suitable for lying down. The shape of these IEMs reminds me somewhat of the NiceHCK NX7 MK4. Passive noise isolation is above average, making these ideal for live performers and on-stage use.

There are 2 cables in the box – one is a high-quality silver-plated cable for the best audio quality and the other is a mic cable with an inline 3-button remote. What’s most unusual to me about these cables is that they’re approximately 150cm in length, compared to the industry standard 120cm. Despite being so long and of average width, the cables are tangle-resistant. They handle well and don’t have any noticeable microphonics.

BASN MMCX internals

Sound

Gear used for testing includes the SMSL RAW-MDA 1, FiiO KA17 and HiBy R3 II. The MMCX are easy to drive, so they don’t have any special source or amplification requirements.

Catering to both musicians and music enthusiasts, the BASN MMCX offers a balanced, slightly warm sound profile. Its mild bass emphasis, relaxed midrange, and clear, smooth treble result in an organic listening experience, where the dual dynamic drivers and balanced armature harmonize seamlessly. The warmer tone, smooth and natural, is the result of a balanced midrange and a softened treble. This combination not only adds a touch of warmth but also improves the overall cohesiveness and naturalness of the sound.

Bass

The bass is moderately elevated, offering a satisfying low-end punch. It has good sub-bass extension, producing a deep but smooth rumble. However, those seeking a more hardcore bass experience may find it falls short of their expectations, as the MMCX strives for a balanced overall sound.

Midrange

The midrange delivers a balanced and engaging sound, with clear vocals and instruments. While percussion attacks might be slightly less pronounced, the upper mids are refined and free from any harshness, making them ideal for long listening sessions.

Treble

MMCX’x treble is slightly laid-back which is again, what I expect to hear with IEMs designed as stage monitors. It’s a slightly warm and very natural-sounding treble, making it super smooth and free of sharpness. While it’s not the most sparkling or detailed, it’s not particularly lacking either. Its definition and speed are average.

Soundstage & Technicalities

The soundstage is average in width but has surprising depth. Instruments are clearly defined against a stable black background, revealing a fair amount of detail despite the warmer tone. Its imaging and layering are about average, but its natural cohesiveness shines through, making you forget about the technicalities and simply enjoy the music.

Comparison

AFUL Explorer ($119)

The AFUL Explorer (review here) has a 1DD+2BA configuration. From the bass to the upper midrange, it looks very similar to the MMCX. But the Explorer adds a 5kHz peak and then plateaus out whereas the MMCX’s treble rolls off. This doesn’t only affect the treble – it changes the entire presentation in varying degrees.

The Explorer delivers bass with a cleaner attack and improved layering. While the bass quantity feels reduced, it’s due to the balance created by its more energetic treble. The snappier transients also help to open up the space between instruments, giving the sound a more spacious feel.

Explorer’s treble is brighter and airier. This gives it better detail retrieval and a wider soundstage. I think the AFUL Explorer could also be a good musician’s monitor, but it might be more fatiguing over time because of its added treble energy. Additionally, the Explorer includes only the most basic accessories, while the MMCX comes with accessories specifically tailored for musicians.

NiceHCK NX7 MK4 ($109)

The NX7 MK4 (review here) features a hybrid 7-driver configuration with 4BA + 2DD + 1PZT drivers and 3 tuning filters. Right away, you can see (if you know graphs) that the NX7 MK4 has a leaner and brighter sound signature. It has less bass impact and sub-bass extension, however, it has better definition in the low frequencies.

The mids on the NX7 MK4 offer greater clarity and vocal presence, while the MMCX delivers a smoother, velvety texture in the midrange. The NX7 MK4 excels in treble, providing more precision, detail, and airiness. When it comes to soundstage and technical performance, the NX7 MK4 generally outperforms the MMCX. However, it’s worth noting that the MMCX is designed as a stage monitor, tuned for smoothness, whereas the NX7 MK4 targets audiophiles who prioritize clarity and detail in their IEMs.

Verdict

The BASN MMCX offers a warm, analog, and balanced sound signature, making it a great choice for extended listening sessions. The accessories—two cables and 12 pairs of eartips—exceed expectations for this price range.

While anyone can enjoy the MMCX, I feel these IEMs are especially compelling for performers and live musicians looking for an affordable stage monitor due to their comfort and non-fatiguing sound signature.
