FiiO JT3 Review | Leading the Pack

The FiiO JT3 is an open-back headphone featuring a 50mm dynamic driver, and it arrives with the heavy task of maintaining the brand’s recent winning streak. Not long ago, I reviewed the FiiO JT7, which I found to be a genuine standout in its price range for its refined planar performance and build quality. Now, FiiO is aiming for a similar impact in the entry-level budget arena with the JT3, coming in at a very competitive $70.

While the JT7 targeted those looking for speed and technicality, the JT3 seems focused on delivering a visceral, engaging experience for the everyday listener. It shares a similar design language with its more expensive siblings—featuring premium aluminium-magnesium alloy grilles and a robust frame—but it brings a unique angled-driver implementation to the table. By pairing that 50mm driver with an open-back architecture, FiiO promises a more holographic and natural soundstage than we usually see at this price point. But does it deliver? Let’s dive in.

Design and Comfort

At just $70, the FiiO JT3 is arguably the most premium-looking headphone I’ve ever seen under the $100 mark. FiiO has clearly put a lot of thought into the physical exterior, resulting in a build that not only looks fantastic but feels substantial in the hand.

The construction features a robust spring steel headband with an adjustable head strap for a secure fit. The ear cups are adorned with a high-quality metal grill, supported by stainless steel or aluminium yokes. Despite the metal components, they remain reasonably lightweight at just 330g.

For comfort, FiiO has opted for large, lush velvet ear pads. They are soft to the touch and have a generous diameter that should easily accommodate larger ears. I’ve been using these for several weeks now, often wearing them all day for long listening sessions, and I haven’t experienced any issues with hot spots or discomfort.

Small details also stand out, such as the colour-coded connectors on the ear cups—a thoughtful touch that even the more expensive JT7 lacked. The included cable is decent for the price; it features an inline microphone, and while it is a bit stiff with some memory, it’s perfectly functional for a budget offering.

Sound Quality

The FiiO JT3 features 50mm dynamic drivers and delivers a punchy, dynamic, and fun V-shaped sound signature. It’s a musical tuning rather than a strictly neutral one, making it a great choice for those who want a vibrant, engaging experience.

Bass

For an open-back headphone, the JT3 provides a surprising amount of bass. The emphasis is primarily on the mid-bass, which gives the sound plenty of impact and body. While there is a bit of sub-bass rumble, it is a light and tight sensation rather than the visceral, massive rumble you might find on the closed-back FiiO FT1. If I had one minor gripe, the mid-bass can occasionally feel a little woolly or thick, but at this price point, the quality is still very respectable.

Midrange

The mids are slightly recessed due to the V-shaped tuning, but they never feel distant or detached from the music. Vocals retain a nice sense of intimacy, and the timbre for both instruments and voices is remarkably lifelike and realistic for a sub-$100 headphone. There is some warmth carried over from the bass, but the mid-range remains solid and holds its composure well, even during more complex musical passages.

Treble

The treble is well-balanced—neither too forward nor too dark. It provides enough detail to counterbalance the bass without becoming sharp or sibilant, even at higher volumes. While it won’t satisfy detail junkies looking for extreme micro-detail, the retrieval is on par with, or better than, most competitors in this price bracket.

Soundstage and Imaging

As expected from an open-back design, the soundstage is quite wide and open. What’s more impressive is the sense of forward depth, which prevents the music from feeling like a flat, two-dimensional plane. It creates a believable, lifelike space that is quite rare to find in such an affordable package.

Power Requirements

With an impedance of 80 ohms, the JT3 isn’t particularly difficult to drive, and you can certainly run it off a standard dongle DAC. However, I found that they really “open up” and perform significantly better when paired with a more powerful source or a dedicated headphone amplifier, which helps to tighten up the bass and improve overall control.

Conclusion

The FiiO JT3 is, quite frankly, an amazing set of headphones for the money. If you are on a budget and looking for an open-back experience, it’s difficult to find anything under the $100 mark that beats these. FiiO has managed to strike a rare balance, offering a build quality that feels far more expensive than its $70 price tag suggests, paired with a fun, engaging, and dynamic sound signature.

While it faces some stiff competition from the likes of the Kiwi Ears Altruva and FiiO’s own JT7, the JT3 often comes out ahead thanks to its more premium materials and its vibrant, “fun” tuning that will likely appeal to a broader range of listeners. It isn’t a reference or clinical headphone, but for those who value musicality, comfort, and an expansive soundstage, it’s a total winner.

If you’re just starting your audiophile journey or simply need a reliable, high-value open-back for your collection, grab these—you won’t regret it.
