Features

At the heart of the XD05 Basic2 is Cirrus Logic’s CS43131 DAC chip. If you’ve looked at portable DACs in the last couple of years, you’ve probably seen this chip popping up everywhere — and for good reason. In the Basic2, it handles up to PCM 32-bit/384kHz, DSD256, and MQA 8x decoding without breaking a sweat.

There’s only a single 6.35mm headphone output, so if you’re running 3.5mm or 4.4mm cables, an adapter is a must. That said, I don’t really see it as a drawback, since the Basic2 more than makes up for it in raw power. With up to 750mW on tap, it has no trouble driving sensitive IEMs or even some of the more demanding full-size cans I threw at it.

You can run it on DC power or from the internal battery. I found myself using DC most of the time, partly because it unlocks the full output power and also saves the battery. On the go, though, you’re looking at around 11 hours via USB input or up to 14 hours with Bluetooth — more than enough for a day out.

The dual gain switch works well in practice, making it easy to move between hiss-free IEM use and powering higher-impedance headphones. There’s also a bass boost option that adds about +6dB to the lows, which gives a nice kick if you’re in the mood for a thicker presentation.

One feature I really appreciate is the swappable op-amps. It means you can tweak the sound to your taste, which adds some long-term flexibility. You don’t get any extras in the box, but xDuoo at least includes spare screws so you’re not stuck if one goes missing mid-swap.

Design

Externally, the XD05 Basic2 sticks with the familiar design language of the series. You get the gunmetal grey chassis and the signature red volume knob with its grippy knurling. The knob also doubles as the input selector, which keeps the front panel clean. There’s an OLED display too, showing handy info like gain and bass modes, volume, and sample rate.

The OLED front display

All the main controls sit on the left side: power, Bluetooth pairing, bass boost and gain switches. What you don’t get are playback controls, which feels like a bit of a missed trick — you’ll need to handle play, pause and track changes from your source device.

On the plus side, the build feels reassuringly solid in the hand and the unit stays cool even after long listening sessions. It’s not a flashy design, but it’s practical and dependable — exactly what I’d expect from xDuoo.

Sound

The XD05 Basic2 has a muscular, confident presentation that comes across as both effortless and robust. There’s an analogue quality to the sound — organic, slightly warm and full-bodied — that makes it easy to listen to for long stretches.

Bass is powerful and authoritative, with enough drive to handle even more demanding headphones like the Sennheiser HD650. At the same time, it stays quiet with sensitive IEMs, free of background hiss or noise.

The midrange is engaging and lifelike, with vocals and instruments carrying a natural presence rather than a digitally etched edge. Treble extends cleanly, with the familiar CS43131 smoothness that keeps things refined but never harsh.

Staging isn’t the widest I’ve heard, but it’s neatly laid out and well organised, making it easy to pick apart layers in the mix. Overall, the Basic2 proves to be a versatile partner for just about any genre I threw at it, but I found it particularly rewarding with jazz and blues, where its warm, organic character really shines.

Comparison

FiiO Q15

At a glance, the FiiO Q15 takes things to another level with a massive 1600mW output power — but that’s only from its balanced output. From the single-ended output, it’s a much tamer 400mW, which is notably less than the XD05 Basic2’s 750mW.

In terms of sound, both the Q15 and XD05 Basic2 lean slightly warm of neutral, though the FiiO comes across as more digitally clean rather than analogue. Its bass is tighter and more defined but lacks the sheer robustness of the xDuoo. The midrange on the Q15 is thinner and less silky, while its treble carries a bit more energy and bite, giving it a sharper edge compared to the Basic2’s more diffuse top end.

Both are excellent devices, and the choice largely comes down to your headphones. If you need maximum driving power and plan to use balanced cables, the Q15 is the way to go. But if your headphones only use 3.5mm or 6.35mm plugs, the Basic2 is not only more practical but will also save you some cash.

Verdict

The xDuoo XD05 Basic2 delivers an outstanding sound with a muscular, analogue character that makes music feel alive and engaging. It has the power to handle a wide range of headphones with ease, and its presentation is both robust and refined.

The only drawback is the absence of a balanced headphone output, which limits its versatility compared to some competitors. Even so, if you’re happy with single-ended connections, the Basic2 offers superb performance and is a fantastic choice in its price range.
