Hidizs S9 Pro Plus Review

Hidizs S9 Pro Plus review featured

In this article, I’m testing the new Hidizs S9 Pro Plus dongle DAC. S9 Pro Plus is an updated version of the S9 Pro and features an ESS9038Q2M DAC chip, along with 3.5mm and 4.4mm headphone outputs. Hidizs nicknamed the device “Martha” to commemorate the carrier pigeons that went extinct 109 years ago (the last surviving female was named Martha). The price for the first 100 units sold will be $69 followed by a regular price of $79.

Design

The design of the S9 Pro Plus shares some resemblances to the previous Hidizs S9Pro like the glass covers on the front and back. This time, however, the S9 Pro Plus replaces the 2.5mm balanced output with a 4.4mm balanced output.

The unit now comes with 2 function buttons. Initially, the 2 buttons were for track skipping but after a firmware update, they now control the volume. Furthermore, pressing both buttons at the same time cycles between the 7 digital filters.

The logo on the front of the device is also an LED indicator that glows different colours depending on the sample rate of the current sample rate being played.

Internally, we find an ESS9038Q2M DAC chip in charge of conversion. The DAC supports Up to PCM 32bit/768kHz and native DSD512. In terms of power output, the device delivers 138mW from the 3.5mm output and 180mW from the 4.4mm output. In case you’re wondering, 180mW is a respectable power output for a dongle DAC, suitable for driving a variety of headphones and IEMs, especially those commonly used on the go.

Sound

In addition to the other changes, the S9 Pro Plus also has a new tuning. This new model introduces a subtle yet tasteful touch of warmth to the audio signature, distinguishing itself from the S9 Pro, which maintains a neutral sound profile. This added warmth lends a pleasing richness to the sound, providing a more inviting and immersive experience. The new tuning doesn’t compromise on resolution; in fact, it manages to maintain the same level of detail and clarity as the previous model.

The subtle alteration in tonality contributes to a more musical presentation without introducing any adverse effects or diminishing the overall resolution. This nuanced adjustment caters to listeners who appreciate a touch of warmth without sacrificing any precision and fidelity.

The lower frequencies benefit from the added warmth, creating a more pronounced and engaging bass response without overshadowing the midrange. The midrange itself remains clear and articulate, ensuring that vocals and instruments maintain their natural timbre and presence.

The treble is handled with finesse, maintaining a level of detail and extension that contributes to an overall crisp and well-defined character. Moreover, the precise treble facilitates a large soundstage and clear spatial imaging.

Verdict

In summary, the Hidizs S9 Pro Plus combines the best of both worlds – the added warmth for a more enjoyable and immersive sound without sacrificing the clarity, resolution, or fidelity that audiophiles seek in a high-quality dongle DAC. It’s a nuanced and well-tuned device that caters to those who appreciate a touch of musicality in their day-to-day audio.
